We can’t wait for the thaw
This kind of weather is here to stay now and our current policy (as a nation) of gritting the main roads then expecting a thaw to take care of the side roads and pavements is no longer going to work!
I hate passing the buck, as I feel as Mayor anything to do with the town it is up to me to get the best deal for residents, but the gritting of roads is a county council responsibility and not the Borough council. To be fair they have been out there and done a better job this year. The policy of the county and I would imagine all highway authorities is to do only main roads NOT pavements and side roads. This has been adequate in the past but no longer.
In “cold” countries citizens are also expected to do their bit too. Is it just an imagined memory that my dad used to clear outside our house and the old boy next door as did everyone else? I believe that liability and the “compo” culture put paid to that; but maybe we need to go back to it. In Germany and elsewhere fines are doled out for non-clearance. A step too far for us Brits maybe, but unless we are prepared to pay the cost of rising council tax bills for gritting (it’s not cheap, nor is the equipment you may use only twice a year.) maybe those of us who can do something should.
Due to last night’s abandoned shopping trip after work and a two hour journey home I am behind in my Christmas preparations. Hubbie is working his socks off to get his PhD dissertation first draft finished before Christmas so is unable to help at all. Every year I say I will start earlier and next year I will! My very best wishes to everyone for this festive season – enjoy quality time with those you care about – that’s the best bit for me and mine.
